Add a name next to the clock

August 10th, 2005 - 06:00 pm ET by R. K.

This tip is aimed at people that want to personalize their profile and display their name, the name of their computer or any other word that you want to be displayed next to the clock on the taskbar. This will allow you to distinguish your profile from others or to simply to make it look pretty ;-).

Here’s how it can be done:

Click “Start”, “Run” and type “intl.cpl”. Click “OK” and you will see the Regional and Language options open in front of you.

Click on the [Customize] button

Select the [Time] button and in this window you will be able to enter the word that you want to appear next to your clock.

Field information:

  • Time Format
Add “tt –“ before the HH:mm:ss entry (in reality you only need to input “tt” to display the name, but it looks nicer if you add a space and hyphen so that it is properly separated from the time).
  • AM Symbol
Enter the name that you want to be displayed, with a maximum if 12 characters (we are using GenerationNT in our example). To enter a word that is longer then 12 characters then you will need to make some changes to your registry. We will see how to do this a little later.
  • PM Symbol
Enter the exact same name as inputted under AM Symbol (this is case sensitive).

Press “OK” so that the changes take effect and then “OK” again to close the Regional and Language settings box. The name will already be displayed next to your clock without you needing to reboot the computer.

If you want to input a name that is longer then 12 characters then you will need to edit two registry entries:

  • s1159
  • s2359

These can be found in the following location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International

You will need to double click on each of these and enter the name that you wish. You must make sure that the name that you input is identical in both keys.

Unlike the previous method, you will have to close your session and log on again or reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
