Adding corrections to the Windows XP CD

Even if you have installed XP with a patched SP1 (or SP2) CD, you should still consult the Windows Update site to see if there are any new updates that need to be applied to your machine, as the SP's will be missing more and more of the updates as time passes by. We will show you have to add these additional updates, as well as the services pack, directly to your Windows XP installation CD.

B/ Changing the OEM tree:

We are going to create a sub-folder named patches in the \$1 folder where the downloaded patches can be run:

Note: The \netfrmk, \wmmkr and \rmclient folders are also created, under the \msapps folder. The explanation will be provided in step F.

The following list is provided by title:

  • For example, the security patch for the Windows XP WIFI system (826942) is only installed on computers that posses wireless technology under XP.
  • On computers that have a plain operating system installed and nothing else, the patches may differ.
  • This list does not take into account certain application updates in this tutorial as these patches are already installed (the details are provided later in the tutorial).

There are different methods for recovering the list of updates that are used during the system update:

1st method:

Using a computer that only has Windows XP, SP1a and the applications (IE6sp1, DirectX9.0b, WMP9 and MSN Messenger 6) installed – the method is as follows – as long as your internet connection is configured, by connecting to the Windows Update site you will see the available updates:
