after installing all recommended updates no longer able to restore from hibernation, xp sp3

Nope, not seeing this issue here after installing all of the offered
updates.

Did a driver for the video card install *along* with the updates ?

HI MowGreen,

When I turn on the machine, as the hibernate file is loaded a
progressbar goes from 0 to 100% near the bottom of the screen (a white
progressbar against a black screen background) but then the machine just
hangs. If I turn it off then on again I get an audio alarm configuration
screen (from this motherboard/bios), then I have to turn it off and on
again, and XP gives me the choice of loading the hibernation file or
deleting it and doing a normal boot. Sorry I wasn't clearer and more
accurate in the first post.

I didn't load any hardware drivers with the last updates. Thanks for
your reply, since you and lots of others aren't seeing this it must be
something with my system. It's kind of annoying, loading from the
hibernate file is a lot faster than booting normally.

Can you recommend a procedure I can use to diagnose this?

My first question would be ... do you really need to use Hibernate ?
I'd use Sleep or Standby instead. The power consumption is the same.

The only reason to use Hibernate is if you leave unsaved work or
programs open. Personally, I have no reason to do that.

If you do need to use Hibernate, then suggest you Disable hibernation,
then delete the current hiberfil.sys or restart the system and it should
be deleted by XP, Enable hibernation, and allow the system to rebuild
another one.
See if the issue reappears again. It may possibly be related to an
emerging Hard Disk issue.

The commands run from a Command Prompt are the same for all of the above
editions of Windows.
BTW, one can use powercfg without the .exe extension.
