AGP graphics card advice?

April 01st, 2011 - 01:52 pm ET by Dallas | Report spam
Just wondering... any general opinions

There are still some new Nvidia GeForce 6800 256MB AGP Video Card for sale.
Then there's the 7 series GeForce 7600GS 512MB AGP Video Cards for sale at
about the same price.

The 6800 is still faster in some areas.. both have pixel shader 3 blah,
blah, blah.. I'm thinking the 7600 has HDMI 1080p and a little higher max
resolution & 512 memory so it's a winner.

Any advice before I pull the trigger?

Follow up...

The GeForce 7800 GS was the last specifically designed GeForce for AGP.

It seem this Axle3D company decided to put a GeForce 7950 GT 512MB DDR3 on
an AGP 8x Video Card and sell it for $110 bucks.

I've heard of an industry interface that allowed card makers to use PCIe
architecture and convert it to AGP on a card and I'm guessing they did
this.

Again, this processor is more powerful than a 6800 in all respects.. but
does that really matter with a single core AMD 3200+ system?

Oh... and I read one personal review that said the standard GeForce drivers
didn't work for this 7950 because they didn't design the 7950 for AGP. He
had to use the driver that came in the box.

That actually sounds kinda logical... and scary.

Make any sense?

...general opinions, yeah... 'bout time you started your own "on topic'
thread instead of hijacking other's... :-)

On your subject line of AGP graphics cards:

I have here a BFG (nVidia) 7800GS 256MB card. Also, have a VisionTek (ATI)
2600XT 512MB card. I still have the original box for the ATI card; not sure
if I could find the box for the 7800GS. I found the ATI card faster, but
finding drivers may be problematic. Additionally, I have a few earlier AGP
cards, but probably not for what you're looking for.

Both cards are available and were working when I replaced (some years ago
now) my computers with PCIe motherboards - in fact, both cards are presently
still installed in their respective motherboards. (Sidebar: I
build/assemble my own machines.)

No need to apologize for your interest in dinosaur age components - I'm
still (for decades now) hoping to resurrect the ol' VIC20.

If you're interested, we could take this to email.

Yes.. I am. I'm a big fan of BFG products and the 7800GS would be an easy
fix.

I assume the labour email is good, I'll drop you a line. If not, just
demunge my hotmail.

I'd say go for the latest and greatest, the 7600 has more memory making it
better at what it does in the FS, making clouds and weather effects, it also
supports HDMI, so you can transfer both audio and video to your TV in one
cable :o)

The advances the 6800 has is that it's video only, where the 7600 has its
own sound card build in for the HDMI, this does take up a bit of the extra
power, but not a lot.
