Another CHKDSK /R Issue

May 15th, 2010 - 09:31 pm ET by PeoplesChoice | Report spam
Chkdsk has found about 20 incorrect Index Entries - but can't correct
them. Is there a good Registry Cleaner (fixer) that I can review?
Thanks

Two points:

1. The registry and the errors that Chkdsk has found are completely
unrelated.

2. There are *no* good registry cleaners. Registry cleaning programs
are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the registry isn't needed and is
dangerous. Leave the registry alone and don't use any registry
cleaner. Despite what many people think, and what vendors of registry
cleaning software try to convince you of, having unused registry
entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

Thank you all. But, is there anything I can do or should do about the
incorrect index entries? I don't even know what these index entries are
or how they affect my system.

Hi, PeoplesChoice.

Now that the others have clarified that your problem has nothing to do with
the Registry, you might want to start a new thread to focus on your CHKDSK
problem. In the new thread, be sure to give us some basic information in
your first post, such as Windows version (there are many flavors of Vista,
and many users of Win7 or WinXP also post here), how many hard drives and
partitions, etc.

And, most important, what kind of problem are you having? WHY did you run
CHKDSK in the first place? And please post the exact text of the error
message you see.

OK, I'll try to put the information together tonight or tomorrow. Thank
you for the offer to help.

To answer your question in a different post in this thread: indes
entries are part of the NTFS file system. They are involved in figuring
out where the pieces of a file lie on the drive.

They are not in the registry, as several posters have already said;
they are buried inside the directory (or folder, if you prefer)
entries on an NTFS drive.

Hi Gene! When I run CHKDSK /R, I get over 20 Incorrect Index Entries.
All of them say :

Index entry xxxxxxxxx.xxx in index $I30 of file 18703 is incorrect.

Where the xxxxxxxxxxx's are, each line has a different file name. The
indexes are all the same (I30) and the file number (18703) is the same
for all 20+ line items. I am experiencing a couple of annoying issues on
the laptop - but I haven't yet noticed a pattern.

I am using Vista Home Premium. The reason I used CHKDSK is that I lost
my sound. I tried to install Microsoft's Fix-It for sound, but got an
error message when I tried to install it. So, I'm attempting to fix what
I can - then contact Microsoft for additional help in installing FixIt
and getting my sound back. Apparently, losing sound with Vista (and HP
laptops) is widespread. If you can help me, it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks...

Bob
