Antivirus for Windows that runs under Linux?

August 22nd, 2011 - 07:04 pm ET by Yousuf Khan | Report spam
Thinking ahead, if I ever get a virus infection in Windows that's so
severe that I can't get back into it, I'd like to be able to just boot
into my Linux and scan the Windows drives from it. Are there any
antivirus software that run from within Linux?

I know that I can always just run one of those standalone bootable
antivirus rescue CD's (and they all run in a version of IsoLinux), but
I'd like to keep my options available. I would probably like to continue
to do other work in Linux while the boring scan is going on, and you
can't really do that with the standalone rescue CD's.

Yes. Clamav, and Avg. ClamAv is provided by most distributions, or you
can download it from
http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/download/

For Avg, it's available at
http://free.avg.com/us-en/download.prd-alf

They are both designed to catch m$ viruses, but run under linux.

As is (I mentioned this before) F-Prot for Linux:

Okay, looks like Clamav is available through the Ubuntu software center.
When I installed and ran it, it said that there were both a program
update and a definition update available for it. It finished downloading
the definition update, but it didn't update the program. Seems a little
confused.

Ah okay, I see that there's a *.deb for it, but when I run it, the
software installer says it's a "badly formed" install file or something
like that.

Here in Germany, the "ct" computer magazine created an antivirus
rescue CD/DVD for Windows, based on Linux. Once or twice a year,
this is include in the magazine (www.ct.de or www.heise.de).

You can file a bug report asking the Ubuntu packagers to update it, or
download it directly from clamav.net, and install it locally.

I installed avg using the .sh file ...

wet http://download.avgfree.com/filedir...73.i386.sh
chmod a+x ./avg85flx-r874-a3473.i386.sh
sudo ./avg85flx-r874-a3473.i386.sh
(use q to quit the viewing of the license, etc., and just keep pressing
enter at each of the prompts, to install with the default settings).
sudo service avgd start
sudo avgupdate

Then you can use avgscan on the windows files.
