Automatic vs. manual configuration: which is faster?

(Using IE7, XP home and a broadband connection) Under tools, internet
options, connections there is an option to "automatically detect settings"
and "use automatic configuration script". Is it faster surfing with
automatically detecting settings, or should I uncheck it? (I have no idea
what an automatic configuration script is.) Thanks
