Unfortunately I don't have an amd64 machine to test for this.
I suggest trying to install the extension from upstream to see if there's the
same problem.
Also, have you tried with Iceweasel 8 ?

No, the extension runs when installed from within the browser. This is
version 2.1.10.

Do you know how I could debug (i.e. get more information than "There was
an error starting Zotero.") this issue?

Also, have you tried with Iceweasel 8 ?

No, I haven't. Is there any hope that this might make a difference?

Thus the bug you report is upstream and has nothing to do with the package
(which is btw for version 2.1.8 right now, not 2.1.10). I am closing it.

Please refer to the Zotero forums: http://forums.zotero.org/3/

I am saying that Zotero (version 2.1.10) does run when installed from
within iceweasel, _but_ Zotero doesn't run when installed system-wide
from the Debian package xul-ext-zotero. Thus there is a problem with
the Debian package xul-ext-zotero and this is what this bug report is
about.

Sorry for the misunderstunding. Reopening the bug. I'll try to have a package
of version 2.1.10 ready as soon as my time allows, and then you can try that
and see if this (rather unspecific and vague) bug persists.
