Bug#657969: xfce4: Pressing Shift key toggles Slow Keys

January 30th, 2012 - 07:40 am ET by Agus | Report spam
Package: xfce4
Version: 4.8.0.3
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

When holding the Shift key for more than 10 secs. the 'Slow Keys' activate,
which renders the keyboard unresponsive for normal use.

Even if the option at "Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use slow keys" is
unchecked, holding the Shift key will toggle this feature. This makes working
in programs like Inkscape, GIMP and the like extremely annoying, as you need to
keep disabling 'Slow Keys' every time it is *accidentally* enabled.

There should be an option to completely disable some or all accessibility
features for people that may not need them.

Thanks.

How exactly do you do that? Because here it doesn't show up. I can keep
shift key pressed as long as I want, slow keys are not enabled.

Regards,

Ok, your message got me thinking and I realized it's not a problem with
XFCE but with GDM3, only that it manifests while logged in. I guess
you're not using GDM as your login manager, right?

Apparently, there is an option in Gconf
(/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins/a11y-keyboard/active)
that, if enabled, captures some keys for accessibility. I disabled it
and the problem is gone.

Cheers.
