Bug#671916: Fw: Bug#671916: quagga and babeld: error when trying to install together

May 08th, 2012 - 04:00 am ET by Christian Hammers | Report spam
Hello

When uploading the latest quagga package which now includes a BABEL daemon,
too, I wasn't aware that there is an existing babeld package already.

It seems the best if both quagga and babeld add a Conflict: against each other
as it does not make much sense to have both packages installed, or?

bye,

-christian-

Subject: Bug#671916: quagga and babeld: error when trying to install together

Package: babeld,quagga
Version: babeld/1.3.1-1
Version: quagga/0.99.21-1
Severity: serious
User: treinen@debian.org
Usertags: edos-file-overwrite

Date: 2012-05-08
Architecture: amd64
Distribution: sid

Hi,

automatic installation tests of packages that share a file and at the
same time do not conflict by their package dependency relationships has
detected the following problem:

WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
libcap2 quagga babeld
Preconfiguring packages ...
Authentication warning overridden.
Can not write log, openpty() failed (/dev/pts not mounted?)
Selecting previously unselected package libcap2.

Processing triggers for man-db ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/babeld_1.3.1-1_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail, and violates
sections 7.6.1 and 10.1 of the policy. An optimal solution would
consist in only one of the packages installing that file, and renaming
or removing the file in the other package. Depending on the
circumstances you might also consider Replace relations or file
diversions. If the conflicting situation cannot be resolved then, as a
last resort, the two packages have to declare a mutual
Conflict. Please take into account that Replaces, Conflicts and
diversions should only be used when packages provide different
implementations for the same functionality.

Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages
(according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be
slightly out of sync):

/usr/share/man/man8/babeld.8.gz

This bug has been filed against both packages. If you, the maintainers of
the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will
resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package. You may then
also register in the BTS that the other package is affected by the bug.

-Ralf.

As far as I understand it, Quagga's babeld is a fork of Juliusz
Chroboczek's, and I guess from [1] that Juliusz will continue to work on
babeld on his own.

I guess Juliusz's changes will be merged into Quagga, but I cannot tell
for the other way. Besides, I guess the release schedules of both
projects are different, so it might happen that both (latest released)
versions of the daemon are different at some point.

I don't know much about Quagga. Isn't it possible to use it with
pristine babeld? Isn't it possible to e.g. have some interfaces managed
by quagga and others by plain pristine babeld (not under control of quagga)?

Having both packages installed makes sense to me, and my opinion is that
quagga should install its files in a way that it does not conflict with
babeld... and it is almost done (babeld binary in /usr/lib/quagga),
except for the manpage. What about renaming it to e.g. quagga-babeld?

Yes, it is. It is also possible to redistribute routes from standalone
babeld to quagga and vice-versa (using "redistribute kernel" statements).

Since standalone babeld is currently slightly more capable than the
version included in Quagga (yeah, I'm working on it), it definitely
makes sense to want to have both packages installed at the same time.

Fully agreed. Please let us know if there are any changes you want us
to make upstream (in either quagga or babeld) in order to make sure that
the two packages are co-installable.
