fbpanel fails to start at all. I will add error log.

APT prefers testing
APT policy: (500, 'testing')
Architecture: amd64 (x86_64)

Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores)
Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8)
Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash

Versions of packages fbpanel depends on:

fbpanel recommends no packages.

Thanks for reporting this!

This is caused by the lack of ALSA-OSS emulation.
You have two possibilities:
- Either load alsa-oss compatibility emulation by hand with modprobe/on
make it persist on your /etc/modules
- Disable this plugin on your ~/.config/fbpanel by removing the block
that looks like this:
plugin {
type = volume
}
