Bug#686856: gnus gets uninstalled if I remove xemacs21, even though I have emacs

September 06th, 2012 - 02:00 pm ET by Mark Galassi | Report spam
Package: gnus
Version: 5.11+v0.10.d

I use gnus with emacs, and for some reason when I installed gnus it also
pulled in xemacs21.

If I try to remove xemacs21 it removes gnus.

This might be as simple as "they are separate gnus packages, emacs has
its own gnus", but that would be confusing: I am nervous about removing
xemacs21 in case it messes up gnus. In this case a package rename of
gnus to gnus-for-xemacs (or something like that) would make sense.

Or it might be that gnus depends on xemacs21 specifically when instead
it should just require some kind of emacs.

Hi,

current gnus package description already explains this:

Note: This package contains beta version from No Gnus series. Users
of GNU Emacs 23 are better served by Gnus 5.13 included in GNU Emacs
23 packages.

So, if you're using a recent GNU emacs, it already contains a more recent
version of Gnus.
