Sure, you aren't using a .deb, you're trying to rebuild an .rpm into
one. I've found that it seldom works as advertised.
Use this instead:
<http://europe.real.com/realplayer/o...rsions>
Worked fine for me just now.

Description-en: Linux Standard Base 4.0 support package
The Linux Standard Base (http://www.linuxbase.org/) is a standard
core system that third-party applications written for Linux can
depend upon.
.
This package provides an implementation of all modules of version 4.0
of the Linux Standard Base for Debian on the Intel x86, Intel ia64
(Itanium), IBM S390, and PowerPC 32-bit architectures with the Linux
kernel. Future revisions of the specification and this package may
support the LSB on additional architectures and kernels.
.
The intent of this package is to provide a best current practice way
of installing and running LSB packages on Debian GNU/Linux. Its
presence does not imply that Debian fully complies
with the Linux Standard Base, and should not be construed as a
statement that Debian is LSB-compliant.

Do you want to install the software package? [y/N]:n
If you install gdebi:
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
You can run the gui version by right clicking on the .deb file in
Nautilus and selecting 'Open With|GDebi Package Installer and that will
bring up the gui for installing. In this case, gdebi determines that it
can actually install all of the dependencies & is asking your permission
to download and install.
To run from the terminal, simply use as I've shown above:
$ sudo gdebi RealPlayer11GOLD.deb
and answer 'Y' (yes) at the 'Do you want to install the software
package? [y/N]:'.
Note: don't include the '$', that is the prompt and there merely to show
that: 1) you are issueing the command from the terminal, and 2) that you
are in regular user mode vs root ('#') mode. If you were in root mode
(sudo -s etc), the command would not need the 'sudo' comand and would
look like:
# gdebi RealPlayer11GOLD.deb
Personally I wouldn't bother (to install RealPlayer) unless you *know*
that you need it for some particular service. It has been abandoned by
both RealPlayer and Helix, and hasn't been updated since 2008. Even then
is was prone to breakage.
What specifically are you trying to accomplish by installing RealPlayer?

Hi, Keith,
I'm using LXDE, not GNOME so...
The 'easy' way:
I downloaded the file, "RealPlayer11GOLD.deb using Opera,
then right clicked the file, told it to, "open." It opened in File
Roller. I told it to extract, gave it the name of a sub-directory in
my /home/cybe directory (/home/cybe/.Real). It did.
Navigating to that directory, I clicked on the file, "realplay.bin"
found in /home/cybe/.Real/opt/real/RealPlayer which, I'll admit, is
hard to find.
It's quite inelegant but I'm the only user of this machine and know
where I installed to.
the 'Right Way':
I imagine it /should/ be extracted into /opt. I'd do this by opening
my file manager (PCmanFM) as root, then double-tapping the file,
"/home/cybe/.opera/temporary_downloads/RealPlayer11GOLD.deb."
When file roller starts, I navigate to /opt/real and tell it to
extract the folder, /RealPlayer to /opt.
Choose, "realplay," not, "realplay.bin."
Done, and accessible to all users.
It's nice, I guess, but I prefer smplayer or totem. There are /many/
more options. I think you'll find more and better options with most of
the FLOSS players.
Hope this helps.
