data loss after installing new windows version

I recently installed XP Home over an old copy of XP Pro.
It warned me that some data loss might occour in the 'my
documents' directory but I didn't expect it on this
scale. I've lost a lot of setup data for programs like
Outlook which I managed to restore, however I seem to
have lost the entire contents of the actual 'my
documents' folder, about 2Gb in total.

I've located what I think was the old folder under pro
but when I try to access it I get an access denied error.
Is the any way to recover the data which is (probably)
still in this folder?
