grand totals in pivot table rows

Hi, when I look at the pivot table options i see a button to show
grand totals in rows. however, it is not working. any ideas? I am
using Excel 2007

Hi Pat

It all depends what data you have in your Data area. Some fields are not
additive, in which case a Grand Total will not appear.
For example if you had Customer as a Row field and Sum of Value and Count of
Value in the Data area, then Grand Total would not appear, but if you had
Value This Year and Value Last Year in the Data area, then a Grand Total for
both years would appear

When trying to generate Grand Totals in a PivotTable, put the items to be totaled in the "Value" area of the PivotTable using the Field List window. Select the PivotTable to be updated, select the Options tab, then click on Field List in the Show/Hide group. The Value area is in the bottom right corner of the window.

I think it has to do with the date field being in the row labels.
because when i move it to column labels it totals
