I created a 2.2 gigabyte partition on a USB memory stick and installed
Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit in this partition. It boots as expected and I am able
to see the hard drive directory structure. My objective is to be able to
use this to recover files from the hard drive should the hard drive not
boot in the future.
When booted from the USB memory stick:
1) When I try to open or copy a file from the hard drive I get an
access violation error. How can I access the files on the hard drive when
I have booted from the USB memory stick? Do I have to create a login with
the appropriate user name and password or can I perform some sort of
login to the hard drive using the appropriate user name and password?
2) I noticed one directory on the hard drive appears empty when it is
actually not empty. This directory has three sub-directories each with
VirtualBox images. Why does this directory appear empty when I have
booted from the USB memory stick? It is the virtual images in these sub-
directories that I would want to recover.
