How do I edit a favorite's url address in IE7?

December 31st, 2006 - 01:59 am ET by cxs | Report spam
In IE6 I used to be able to do this easily using the right-click, properties
method. Now all I get is a window with just the General and Security Tabs. I
get the same thing if I try via Windows Explorer.

Also, how do I get rid of the annoying ".url" endings in my favorites. In
IE6 this wasn't a problem and never had ".url" show up on any of them. No, I
cannot and do not want to hide all extensions for all file types - this is
not an option for me.

I've searched but all I see is other problems which I hope I never have!
(and maybe won't even find out if I can't get IE7 to behave). btw, when I
right-click a favorite/bookmark in Opera, I can easily edit the url and none
of them show .url on them either - just like IE6 used to do. In IE7, if I
rename a favorite and remove the .url part, the link breaks.

Anyway, I'm running IE v7.0.5730.11 on WinXP Pro SP2 (w/all updates).
I also use Opera and Firefox, but Opera is my default browser at the moment.
And if it matters, I use the latest AVG Free anti-virus, Sana Security
SafeConnect and sometimes I scan with Spybot S&D.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Regarding question #2, follow "Method 3" here:

Favorites display the trailing .URL for Internet shortcuts:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/favext.htm

"Web Document" tab is missing when you check the properties of a URL file:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/webdoctab.htm
(Note that the above fix sets IE as the default handler for .URL files)

Thanks for the quick reply!

Method 3 didn't quite worked because my URL type had no "Advanced" button
available. Weird thing is that in the window it stated "opens with Internet
Explorer" along with the IE icon, but down below it said Opera was the
default along with something that said to "click here to reassign it to
Opera"?!? So I did and suddenly the .url's were gone in IE7 - go figure.

Your suggestion to my 2nd problem also worked. I got my Web tab back and no,
the fix did NOT set IE as my default browser as I thought would happen -
Opera remained.

2 less headaches for me :)

Thank you so much for your help.
Have a great new year!

This is true as long as the third-party web browser uses the same ProgID ("InternetShortcut") for .url file association. This may not be the case with any other browser (example, Avant Browser).
