IE7 keeps saying "...encountered a problem & must close down"

October 04th, 2007 - 09:59 pm ET by peebs | Report spam
From time to time I get the above problem. Other times I get "IE7 not
responding".
I never had this problem with IE6 and I notice that many people are
reverting to IE6. Is this an inherent problem in IE7 and if so why don't MS
just come out and say so. At least then we would know that a fix is being
worked on.
I am running XP home SP2 all fully up to date. One think I did notice is
that I installed IE7 about the same time as I upgraded to Norton 360. Is
there any connection? Has anyone else had a similar problem with the same
configuration?
I regularly run Spybot and ad aware plus AV and have never found a "critcal"
problems, just the usual cookies.
Any comments would be most welcome.

Do you still have the problem if you uninstall Norton 360?

I have the same problem, and have had it for several weeks now. Many people
have posted the problem. All anyone is ever told is to turn off your add
ons. No real answers.

I have to use Firefox. IE crashed as soon as it starts. I have removed all
addons from IE.

Here is my list of installed software. I am sure someone will say that
"software x" is the problem, but the real problem seems to be Vista and IE7.

Please Microsoft fix this problem.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.
I have tried running it without add ons and i have re-installed Norton 360
as i originally had problems with 360. On both occasions the problem did not
appear but as the problem is very intermittant with IE7 running with add ons
and with 360 it is hard to tell if that really fixed the problem. My main
question was to find out if others had the same problem with the same
configuration. It does seem from this forum that IE7 is not a stable piece of
kit. What, if anything, is MS doing about it?
By the way Hoss, I am running WinXP SP2 not Vista. I will steer clear of
Vista until MS get all the bugs fixed!!--

IE 7 is very stable on my copy of Windows XP.

For its part, Microsoft has published a deal great of information on how
to use IE 7 to best advantage and to solve problems when they occur. And
that's just a drop in the bucket compared to all the information
available from trusted and knowledgeable sources on the internet.

Granted, IE 7 is far from perfect. But in my experience, the vast
majority of problems reported in this newsgroup are self-inflicted.
