Installing trend wf 6.0

December 24th, 2009 - 02:51 pm ET by John | Report spam
Hi

sbs 2003 standard. I need to install Trend wf 6.0. Are there any special
considerations I need to keep in mind? In the past we have suffered issues
with wf such as slow speed and had to tweak wf to get by.

Many Thanks

The firewall driver is still installed on the clients because it's also used
by TM's outbreak prevention feature. The firewall feature is disabled when
the check box is cleared, but the driver is installed. If you want to
prevent the driver from loading, you can set it's startup type to Disabled
in the services manager on each pc, but that disables the outbreak
prevention.

Using 6.0 service pack 1 I kept 'Enable Firewall' unchecked in wfbs
console but it still installed firewall on client pc. Any ideas?

Another vote for using conventional scan instead of Smart Scan
(which increases network traffic and server load as the virus scanning is
done on the antivirus server). Also, you may want to be sure to install
the service pack for WFBS 6.0. It adds a checkbox to disable the firewall
and remove the firewall drivers, which makes sense if you are not using
the firewall. I was always annoyed that the drivers were installed
whether I wanted to use the firewall or not.

Don't change the firewall by disabling its startup type. If one does not
want the firewall client at all, and one does not care about Outbreak
Prevention and network virus detection features, then the firewall drivers
can be removed via the console.

Go to Preferences > Global Settings > Desktop/Server > Firewall Settings >
Disable Firewall and uninstall drivers.

Thanks Gregg. I have just disabled the firewall but left the drivers in
place for outbreak prevention. I didn't realize TM now has an option to not
install the firewall drivers at all. Are you aware of issues with leaving
the drivers installed? I've never seen the outbreak prevention kick in, so
while I feel a little safer with it in place, I also wouldn't feel terrible
about removing it.

I don't know about 6.0, but I believe those drivers were the root of a huge
problem with massive network slowness when I upgraded a client from 5.0 to
5.1. I had to revert to 5.0 to fix it.

I am still afraid to upgrade that client to 6.0. I know the drivers are used
for Outbreak Prevention, but they MAY be used for other stuff as well even
when the firewall itself is not enabled.

I hate having to install these drivers on all my workstations. I'm putting off migrating my workstations over to the new 6.0sp1 server hoping i can figure out a way to not have to install these drivers on every pc. Last time i upgraded i had a few blue screens at remote locations afterwards and don't want a repeat of that.
