Internet Explorer or Yahoo Mail problem?

August 14th, 2012 - 09:37 pm ET by Dennis | Report spam
My friend has two lap top and two desk top computers. All use IE to
connect to the internet. Three will open .pdf files in Yahoo Mail and
the newest one will only open some but not all .pdf files in Yahoo Mail.
I don't know about the other three computers with Windows XP but the
newest is SP3 with all updates.
What might be different and what might fix the problem?

Does the problem machine have a PDF reader installed? A PDF reader is not
a MS product.

Adobe Reader
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Foxit Reader
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

Adobe is more 'well known', but Foxit is much more lightweight and my
personal preference.

If one is installed, create a file association.

1. Download and save the attachment on the desktop.
2. Right click on the saved file.
3. Select: Open With from the pop-up menu.
4. Click: Choose [default] Program.
5. Select: Your PDF reader.
6. Check: Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.
7. Click OK.

This should enable you to open these attachments directly from the e-mail
now.

It has the newest Adobe reader installed. It was the same situation with
Foxit PDF Reader installed.

"the newest one will only open some but not all .pdf files in Yahoo Mail"

Since SOME open, I'd assume conflict with internet plug-in from Adobe.
Check version of IE on new PC to make sure you have latest version of
Reader.

NO need to answer these questions here - for you to decide while trying it
...

All PCs use same version of reader ?
Same version of Internet Explorer ?
Check to see - can you SAVE file to desktop and open it ok ( not using the
IE plug-in ?) You can check in Internet explorer plug-in section. If That
means nothing to you, go to www.adobe.com/reader

Should you decide to download latest software from them - WATCH the screen -
by default it will download ... some program , some toolbar etc, so UNCHECK
any box that appears to " install xyz and make it default" .

Here's a link to troubleshooting plug-ins

I doubt this is it, but there is a form of malware for PDF.

A PDF file can have javascript inside it. That's a form of
executable code. I guess at the time, Adobe thought that
was cool.

In Acrobat Reader, in the preferences, Javascript should
probably be turned off for safety.

Some tools, like web browsers, may do a scan for Javascript
in a PDF, but I don't know what they do in cases where it is detected.
Whether they allow the PDF to be opened or not, or whether an
attempt is made to delete the Javascript.

Try scanning the files, with the AV on the computer, as
I would expect Javascript to be relatively easy to detect.

It's just another example of "features that should not exist"
on a computer.

The file is automatically scanned when it is clicked on. Then you have
a pop up and you can choose "open" or "save" file. If it is going to
open, a bar showing the progress is displayed and it opens. If it is not
going to open, it shows the paper sheets flying across the pop up and
going into a folder. It will show this an hour and nothing more ever
happens.
