How come KDE 4.8.3 was available via the Cinnamon update manager and
not YaST?
Cheers

i've neither installed nor used 'Cinnamon update manager' so i'm not
sure what it is doing (but if it is anything like apper or packagekit,
it is garbage and will kill your openSUSE)..
YaST Online Update pulls only from the update repo...and, that repo does
not contain 4.8.3..
so, to get that installed with YaST you have to use Software Management,
while the 4.8.3 containing repo is enabled and "switch" sources..
there are several posts with specific instructions in
forums.opensuse.org, have a look here: http://tinyurl.com/6ulebe6 where
you are also likely to find some of the problems folks are having after
'upgrading'you may want to weigh the cost vs benefits..

Upgraded two PCs this way to KDE 4.8.3 without any obvious issues at
all. Sorry, LOL.

4.8.3 is available via obs://build.opensuse.org/KDE
I just found I run 4.8.3 and I have never used a Cinnamon thing.
I remember reading lately Cinnamon was available for Debian-based Mint
Linux, and provided a cool-new re-tooled version of Gnome to Mint users, but
never checked in to whether they provide for other distros.
Another reason Suse doesn't rush things for installation is that I get the
impression they are more cautious in testing.
