Linux friendly network scanner and fax?

August 27th, 2011 - 08:22 am ET by Ignoramus4705 | Report spam
I need to find myself a fax machine and scanner that can scan multiple
pages and provide them over a network, or email (if it has email, I do
not even need a fax capability). I would like to find something that
is inherently Linux friendly, preferably has a shared drive for
scanned documents that it exposes to the network, without the need for
too much vendor software.

Is there such a thing?

Thanks

HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g will scan to network folder or e-mail, and
also fax. Has a sheet feeder which I've used for up to around 20 sheets
(auto back & front). It probably does more - I just haven't had reason
to try.

Prints OK too :)

Linux setup a doddle. (Currently using Ub 10.10)

I use a Brother mfc5890cn.
(on windows but it has linux drivers and software to download).

I have a Brother MFC7820N (an Ethernet multi-function printer, scanner,
FAX), and it, too has downloadable drivers for Linux. I was never able to
get the FAX to work, though, and according to the Brother software reps
it's technically illegal to use the FAX feature with Linux because of some
licensing or international standards. And the software reps for the Linux drivers
are Japanese and communications is via email, and they are SO polite, even
when they're essentially telling you that what you want to do can't be done.

I am assuming you want the CUPS driver:

Thanks for the links. They look very familiar and may be the links
to the driver sources that I tried about 3 years ago - or their updated
versions. At that time I struggled for a couple weeks, going back and
forth via email with the Japanese software tech reps. I finally gave up
and decided that if I had to send a FAX, I could just fire up Wind**s.
If I have the time, though, I'll try installing FAX CUPS drivers again for
Ubuntu. It would be nice to have all my OSes be self-sufficient. :-)
