Moving to new pc

March 22nd, 2011 - 11:17 am ET by bj | Report spam
Hi all,

I'm moving from XP to Win7; I'm using WLM for email & usenet & feeds.
I am not signing in to WLive, though I have an ID.

How do I move everything over so the new pc has it all the way it is on the
old on so I don't have to d/l everything again?

Do I just copy over the message store? & if so, into which directory on the
new machine? export & import? or what? (the last big migration I made was OE
to WLM but all on the same machine)

I need a sort of step-by-step instruction set, if possible.
Thanks for help.

Win7's Easy Transfer will step you through the process. Simple as π.

This answer is from Cnet forums, and is the easiest, I think:
http://forums.cnet.com/7723-19169_102-402373.html

All of your Windows Live Mail account settings, email, RSS feeds, atc. are
stored in the following locations:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<your Windows username>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

Windows 7: C:\Users\<your Windows username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Live Mail

Copy the Windows Live Mail folder over before launching Windows Live Mail,
replacing any existing Windows Live Mail that may be there, and your
accounts/emails should appear within the application. Just note that those
directories are hidden by default, so you'll need to type them in manually
or enable the viewing of hidden folders/files.

I started that process. I bailed when the to-be-transferred file-formation
got to an estimated time of 10+ hours & still going up. I'd really rather
not spend 2-3 days making the switch while not being able to do anything
else in the meantime!

bj, hang on a day or two before attempting this. The methods that have
been suggested will only work if you transfer from the XP version to
/precisely the same build on W7/. If your XP version is outdated or you
already have a newer version on W7, they are doomed to failure. It's my
bedtime now, so /please /wait a bit until I can give you the baby steps
to get it right. You risk losing all your contacts, for one thing...

Well-intentioned (?) but quite poor advice, seasoned with a dose of
unhelpful fear-mongering.

Windows Easy Transfer will diagnose any differences between systems and
advise you how to make a successful transfer. Of course if you choose to
cobble together your own wrong-headed approach, that is your
prerogative. Pray tell, how is Easy Transfer doomed to failure? Do you
actually have experience with Easy Transfer?

Your effort promoting FUD, suggesting that one risks losing all their
contacts, is sad. Easy Transfer deletes nothing from the XP machine.

Gosh... we're holding our collective breath waiting for your to swoop in
with your baby steps which will save the day. Yeah... let's all wait a
day or two, until your can read up on a "solution' with which you have
no history.

@bj... start here...

... or you can hang around for two days until the self-appointed Geek
Squad arrives with an answer.

I know your pain. It's almost as though starting over would be easier.

KCB's post pointed to the "short cut"... Here's a link to a Microsoft
forum that follows that path... Note the recommendation to update WLM...

Good luck!
