Obnoxious Videos Start Playing

August 19th, 2012 - 11:51 am ET by Ricky Jimenez | Report spam
I have Firefox 14.0.1 and I notice that on certain websites like
huffingtonpost.com, obnoxious advertising videos immediately start
playing when I go there. It is the loud music that really annoys me.
How do I go about preventing videos playing without my consent?

Since you decided to install an extension to support Flash inside of
Firefox, you could disable the Flash extension until if and when you
want to watch a Flash video at some web site.

If you don't have a multimedia keyboard that lets you easily mute the
sound (without having to use the sound tray icon), get something to help
control volume and muting of sound, like Nirsoft's Volumouse.

NoScript - http://noscript.net/

" The NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox,
Seamonkey and other mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source
add-on allows JavaScript, Java, Flash and other plugins to be executed
only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank).

NoScript also provides the most powerful anti-XSS and anti-Clickjacking
protection ever available in a browser.

NoScript's unique whitelist based pre-emptive script blocking approach
prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even not
known yet!) with no loss of functionality...

You can enable JavaScript, Java and plugin execution for sites you trust
with a simple left-click on the NoScript status bar icon
http://noscript.net/features (look at the picture), or using the
contextual menu, for easier operation in popup status bar-less windows.
Watch the "Block scripts in Firefox" video by cnet.

Turn off Flash, or use Adblock Plus or do both, as I do.

The very nice Prefbar add-in makes it easy to turn on and off both
Javascript and Flash.
