Start up problems

August 01st, 2006 - 03:00 am ET by roadrunner | Report spam
I am running win xp pro. When the pc starts up, it does everything fine,
until it's time for the desktop icons and start button to appear...the
desktop wall paper loads then it can take 4 min for the remainder to appear.
After that all works fine.
Any idea what might be causing the delay in starting?
I've run various spyware programs and such, but nothing shows up.

Start > Run and type in

msconfig

Go to "Startup" tab and uncheck everything. Take into account that it will
disable your antivirus software and your firewall if you use a third party
one. Restart normally and see if it runs faster.

From my experience, admittedly not voluminous, that can be caused
by startup looking to start programs that don't exist or can't be
found. There are 20 and 30 second delays while some things wait
for a program to start and if it never does, you wait thru each
of those delays.

So, it's probably boot time startup programs that are causing the
delays.
Using MSConfig as already mentioned is one way to start looking
for the culprits. Turn everything off and see if it improves the
boot time. If it does, start adding things back one at a time
until you find a culprit or three<g> that extends the time
noticeably. It's a pain to do all those restarts, I know, but it
can work.

Another option is to start uninstalling applications until it
improves the timing. Start with the least used and go from
there. Keep a list so you can put them back if they aren't
causing problems. Sometimes just a re/uninstall is enough to fix
a problem too.

Unless you don't mind losing everything on your boot drive, keep
reinstalling XP as a last resort. If there's nothign there you
mind losing, then a reinstall might be the thing to do.
Start with a repair install and see if that helps.
If no help, go for hte full install; you'll lost everything on
the drive that way but it'll usually fix things.
Like I said, keep for last resort though.

Come back and let us know; there are many, many things that can
be done.
