Is there anything good with Microsoft FLIGHT?

January 20th, 2012 - 08:55 am ET by mdavis | Report spam
I've spent (wasted, actually) a bit of time on various forums reading
posts of speculation on the new FLIGHT. There is a lot of negativity
surrounding this "game" (yes, they dropped the Simulator from the name),
but no one really knows what it's capable of doing for US (the hard core
faithful). A lot of attention is given to the basic application being
free, with add-on modules for a fee, and the fact that a few high
profile developers have been shown the door for refusing to give MS
exclusive rights to sell their products (PMDG is one).

So in an effort to be positive, I've looked at the official screenshots
from the official web site in full screen 1920x1200 and I'm seeing a lot
that I DO like:

http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/ Comments reference screenshots
and dates from the web site:

December 2010 - frame #3
1) Ground cover and waterfalls in Hawaii look very realistic, although
some of the screen shots show far more waterfalls than I remember from
my 10 days on Kauai which has the most rain - I've never been on the big
island.

2) Water is an appropriate color with nice reflective waves and
transparency.

January 2011 - #1
3) Ground detail appears to be photorealistic with cultivated ground
and irregular patches - although this could be fractal-generated.

4) Clouds here and elsewhere look very realistic.

January 2011 - #4
5) Threads of reflected water from streams, if realistically depicted,
are good. I'm a bit skeptical, however, that there are that many
running rivulets coming off the hills except perhaps after a rain.

March 2011 - #1
6) Nice Stearman

May 2011 - #2
7) Nice handling of waves on the shoreline
8) Well forested ground cover - may be graphics card related

May 2011 - #5 & #6
9) Clouds blend well with terrain - a problem in FS9 and FSX even with
add-ons.

Oct 2011 - #1
10) Awesome battleship

OVerall, there seems to have been an emphasis on weather and cloud
display, which was certainly needed from the default FSX and FS9
platforms Shots of the Maule panel suggest the same realism with
instrumentation.

On the other hand, no mention of ATC, what modules will be available and
when, cost of add-ons, etc. But absence of evidence is not evidence of
absence, so we'll just wait and see. There are a few beta testers who
sound more of less optimistic, but they are strictly following their NDA
agreements and not talking about anything.

So, yes, it has potential if you forget the arcade videos and look
beyond the hype.

To me it looks like the scenery has gotten a lot of attention, but if the
way it's gonna work is that you get the demo for free and has to buy every
little bit of extra world, buildings, aircrafts etc. from M$ exclusively I'm
not sure it's going to appeal to us simmers, who are used to crisscross the
entire globe at will, and getting nice free add-ons or shopping around for
the best and most realistic models of any thing. If M$ is going to play
Apples game of Monopoly we are going to wait for ages to get our home turf
to fly over, and an other few years to get the right type of buildings
there.

Yes I would like the outside world to look as real as the inside of my make
believe cockpit, but not at that price, I bought FSX because it had more
real looking water textures and clouds, but for the flying parts I'm still
using FS9, as it's less annoying to deal with.

I will NEVER purchase an Apple product because of their monopoly and
DRM policies. Having to puchase music from the Apple store to play on
their devices rather than downloading a tune from anywhere, seriously
what can an ipod do that a normal mp3 cant...play music? Even Acrobat
Reader drives me nuts wanting updates every few days when its just a
silly little utility which lets you read a PDF :(

I was trying to be objective and optimistic because there has been so
much negativity online, but I agree that I will have to see how many
modules I'll need and at what cost before I get excited.

There are no commercial jets - yet. I saw a post from one of the PMDG
programmers over on one of the Avsim forums who said Microsoft contacted
them about doing planes but wanted to sell everything through MS and not
let PMDG sell anything on their own. PMDG told them to get lost, so
that is a major consideration. Surely there will be add-on planes
available. I don't really care whose label is on them as long as they
are good quality and realistic and reasonably priced.

Regarding the scope of scenery, that is one of my main concerns and may
well be a deal breaker. If I can add world scenery in modules, say
Australia, North America, South America, Europe, Asia at maybe $50US
each, that would take $150US to cover the globe. Add a few planes at
say $40 each and that's another couple hundred. If I look at the cost
of my add-ons in FS9 and FSX, that's pretty much in line with what I end
up paying and would be a logical inflationary increase over the base
cost of FSX. What I will NOT do is pay $40 each for limited areas of
photorealistic scenery around a few major airports that limit my flight
plan paths or that will cost thousands of dollars (assuming they are
available for the entire globe) to complete the "sim." I love flying
VFR low and slow from time to time around Alaska, the Rockies, etc., but
if I can't fly from NYC to LAX to London to Tokyo, it isn't of much use
to me other than as a diversion from my normal flying.

Potential for what?
