turd chrisv, which Linux media player should I use? 3rd request

June 06th, 2012 - 02:04 pm ET by DFS | Report spam
Gentoo 11 LiveCD offers 32 multimedia apps, and 9 video players:

Dragon Player
Gnome Player
Kaffeine
Movie Player
SMPlayer
VLC
XBMC
gxine
xine

http://bayimg.com/JaOIGAADK

1 or 2 good/great apps is ALWAYS better for users than 8 or 9 mediocre
apps, but you can't tell that to "choice is good" morons like you and
the other cola "advocates".

Anyway, which of the nine I should use to play a video? And why?

<now slink away because you know nothing about Linux or any of its apps,
and couldn't make an argument anyway>

It makes sense to have a number of choices in the ecosystem... but to come
by default on one system?!?!? Yeah, that is a bit daft.

From those listed, my first choice would be VLC. It's a great video /
general media player with all bells and whistles, and play virtually
everything you throw at it.

If you're into full integration with the environment you're using,
pick Dragon Players if you're using KDE or Totem (Gnome Player I
suppose) if you're using Gnome. Both are decent media players.

I myself like to use mplayer with no GUI, but that one's not listed
(although I suspect included on the DVD).

In case you don't know: the Gentoo Live DVD is a showcase release. It
is meant to show prospective Gentoo users what applications are
available and how they look and work. There's also five or six window
managers included for example.

Nothing "daft" about that.

I use it often. At least on OS X, though, it is quirky and buggy. The
default settings are rather absurd... and even then it will often need to be
re-started just to get the "video filters" to work... a term that makes
sense to a technical crowd but is not what the general user would look for
as they seek out how to brighten an image.

That is not stated on the "About" page:
<http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml>

Nor on the Live DVD page: <http://goo.gl/y0vy1> nor the FAQ for the Live
DVD: <http://goo.gl/57VTm>

Still, I am open to you supporting your claim and admit I am not familiar
with Gentoo (I have never used that distro). As is my norm, if I am wrong I
will openly admit to it.

If they advertise it as a showcase of apps then it makes sense to have the
different programs - though they should also provide a comparison of them
with a discussion.

After swilling some grog, TomB belched this bit o' wisdom:

You really thought his crap merited a serious answer?
