Gentoo 11 LiveCD offers 32 multimedia apps, and 9 video players:

Dragon Player
Gnome Player
Kaffeine
Movie Player
SMPlayer
VLC
XBMC
gxine
xine

(why is it beyond the intelligence of the distro makers to understand
that 1 or 2 good/great apps is ALWAYS better for users than 8 or 9
mediocre apps?)

Anyway, you like to spew and babble on about choice is great, so tell me
which of the nine I should use to play a video. And why.

Or slink away because you know nothing about Linux or any of its apps,
and couldn't make an argument anyway.

Choice
Oh and each one of the basement dwellers responsible for those
players 5 seconds of fame.

VLC and mPlayer also have Windows versions.
Both are decent.

He's a Windows user so he should be familiar with at least VLC and
mPlayer.

Totem is supplied with Solaris, but unfortunately, when you pop in a
commercial dvd (movie), it won't play it. And of course when looking at
Suns FAQS, they say it won't play them. Just free ones.
