Upgrade from 11.04 to 12.04

June 13th, 2012 - 05:08 pm ET by Jack Fearnley | Report spam
I am currently using 11.04 and have a test system for evaluating 12.04.

12.04 seems mostly satisfactory under Gnome Classic with a few exceptions:

1) While I can put an application up on the launch panel, there seems to
be no way to remove it.

2) I would like to put web site urls on the panel but don't see how.

3) I cannot find the trash icon on the desktop. It claims it's there
but it is not visible.

4) Some of these questions may be answered in Ubuntu help if I knew
where to find it.

All (printable) suggestions welcome

If you locked an icon to the panel, you can also unlock it.

2) I would like to put web site urls on the panel but don't see how.

I think you would have to create instances of firefox with the url-s as
parameters. I have not looked into how that can be done.

3) I cannot find the trash icon on the desktop. It claims it's there

I have several applications with blank icons. Mouse-over shows their
names. Mildly annoying, but manageable until I find a way to supply the
right icons.

4) Some of these questions may be answered in Ubuntu help if I knew
where to find it.

Google?

Select it and press <Delete>?

Right-clicking it might provide something of value.

2) I would like to put web site urls on the panel but don't see how.

Use the browser's Bookmarks or Favorites feature.

Why waste Panel space?

3) I cannot find the trash icon on the desktop. It claims it's there

Why do you want to find it? I never use mine.

The trash should be accessible in a file manager, like Nautilus, or even
in a terminal.

Change your options to really delete, bypassing the trash. Use a desktop
directory (folder) for trash if you are cautious.

4) Some of these questions may be answered in Ubuntu help if I knew
where to find it.

Isn't it available in the Top Panel as a blue question mark icon? Or in
the System Menu?

I have no clue what you are using for a DE (desktop environment), so I
cannot go further, except to say:

Try the <F1> key, which is pretty much the universal Help key on any
computer system.

Then there is Wikipedia and Google.

rejected the Truth, by what means do they discern a lie?

Because that's what he *want's* to do?

So what?

The trash should be accessible in a file manager, like Nautilus, or even
in a terminal.

And from the desktop if that's what he wants.

Change your options to really delete, bypassing the trash. Use a desktop
directory (folder) for trash if you are cautious.

Or just use the trash can like you can do on most other properly
implemented and familiar OS's and Linux DEs.

Don't you know? Don't you have a copy of 12.04 / Unity there you can
look at. Surely one of those 64 machines you told us about so many
times must be running it, even in a VM? (Does Ceed know you are
running Linsux on such 'old junk'?)

I have no clue what you are using for a DE (desktop environment), so I
cannot go further, except to say:

What do you *think* he might be using, given he just told us he was
'Evaluating 12.04'? and asking the questions he has?

I think he knows that <rolls eyes>.

And the following sentence after that reads:

"12.04 seems mostly satisfactory under Gnome Classic with a few exceptions:"

Yeah...no clue, what-so-ever, about what DE being used.
[/sarcasm](Sad, but this callout is necessary.)

(Now, if one of us would have said that, there's a good chance we would have been
verbally assaulted by everyone from Dan C to Cybuh Wizuhd.)
