What does "Copied Locally" mean?

January 08th, 2010 - 11:33 am ET by Lance | Report spam
I have a few files that show up in my Sync's activity log at least every few
days, sometimes daily. The description for the activity is simply "Copied
locally."

Additionally, I find it interesting that the "modified" date in Explorer
does not show today's date (as it would if the file was simply copied in
place). It simply shows the last actual modified date.

Sync's documentation ("Online help") nor a search online yielded helpful
results.

So, what does Copied Locally mean and why does it happen?

By the way, let me just say THANKS for this product. Even though I know many
of us have had issues with it, let's keep in mind that MS has provided this
tool and its support for FREE. I've tried other programs, even paid ones, and
they all have more limitations than Sync. For me, this makes the challenges
worth enduring - I can't find anything better.

Hi, Lance.
I don't know. I've never seen this in Live Sync Activity. I only see "change
by," "received from" and "Sent to" entries.

FolderShare had recognized that the computer already had an identical copy
of that file elsewhere, perhaps in another library, and it made a copy of
that file instead of requesting a copy be sent from another computer.

I am experiencing this exact same problem right now. Basically I have my
Visual Studio Projects folder sync'd between work and home. What is
happening is my entire projects folder syncs successfully except for one
file. When I change that file on my home machine, it never uploads to my
work machine. The Activity window says:

Changed by <homemachine>

All other files upload to my work machine after this message. However for
this file, about an hour later it does:

Copied locally

which reverts all my changes. If I go in and redo the changes, it happens
again. So my log basically looks like:

Copied locally
Changed by <homemachine>
Copied locally
Changed by <homemachine>
Copied locally
Changed by <homemachine>
Copied locally
Changed by <homemachine>

As far as I can tell there is nothing special about this file. It works
fine in Visual Studio 2008, and compiles just fine (it is a C# file). I just
cannot make changes to it at home. Furthermore I am within file count, name,
and size restrictions. The file name doesn't contain any weird symbols (only
ASCII letter). In fact I am continually adding more files and source changes
without problems.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, guys.
Not sure if it will help, but here's a screenshot: http://imgur.com/ggS0M

Tony - That makes sense, but wouldn't it eventually realize that the file
structure is complete? The funny thing here is that it repeats daily or so.
