Unable to play/rip cds - computer not reading cds, no list of songs provided.
Similar to an empty drive. Initially had no problems, but recently only
approximately 1% of cds will work.

Can you see the contents of a Data disk when you're in windows
explorer - for example, can you view the files on the Windows CD on
your drive (often D: or E: drive is the CD)

If that seeks and churns a lot, perhaps the CD reading laser is dirty,
or it may be on the way out - they can last up to 5-10 years but often
less under heavy use.

What about playing the CDs in a standalone audio/hifi CD player, or
your car CD player - any problems there which might indicate the disks
themselves are scratched beyond repair ?

The drive used is dvd rw drive (F:). Unable to view data cd files on
microsoft word. However, able to play dvds in wmp and windows media center.
Also, dvd is recognized in drive while in word. Are there separate reading
lasers for cds and dvds? CDs play alright in home and car stereos.

Yes, the laser 'colour' is different for DVD and CD, so it's possible
that one's burned out but the other is still functional.
