Word 2010--List number item 1 changes indent

Is List Number 3 Level 3 of a multilevel list? If not, how are you
restarting numbering? What is the "Aligned at" setting?

The List Number 3 style follows the Heading 3 style.

Played with it some more with no better results. Aligned left 1.5 in.,
hanging .5, as I stated. If I click in the step, there is no "restart
numbering" option; only continue # or set @ 1. Continuing # does just
that; restarting # causes all the steps to number correctly, but all
are improperly aligned (reset to 0 & .25). If I then correct the 2nd
item's properties, the following items are correctly numbered and
formatted, but the first step remains with the wrong settings (0 & .
25), even when I select it and reapply List #3 style.

There is a difference between "Aligned at" and "Indent at." And presumably
your restart method is to right-click and choose "Restart numbering." You
might have better luck with a multi-level list with an unnumbered style to
restart the numbering. I think what you're doing when you restart numbering
manually in this one is creating a new list instead of continuing the
existing one. See

For what it's worth, using the Restart option does seem to create a new list. You can verify this by checking the ActiveDocuments.ListTemplates.Count property; in the Immediate window of the Visual Basic Editor, type ?ActiveDocument.ListTemplates.Count and press Enter.
