The world of mobile games is in a complete revolution. While Java games still make up an important amount of business, the change towards smartphones, starting with the iPhone and its App Store has restarted a sector which was very dependant on the phone carriers.
The power of the hardware now allows the games to move to another level, with developers being able to unleash their creativity and offer games that wouldn’t have been possible when designed in Java, now moving slowly closer to productions released on portable game consoles.
The last few months have seen bigger and 3D releases from the big market players, as well as a range of less ambitious, casual games (although not necessarily less interesting) on the App Store of course, but also on other platforms.
Different mobile application download portals are opening up one after the other, with the productions becoming more advanced and with greater rhythm, to the point that it is becoming difficult to look at all the new releases on offer.
This is why this article is starting to look more at a sample of current releases rather then all of the latest offerings offered by numerous makers. This is so that you will firstly be able to appreciate the evolution that has started to really come on line over the last few quarters.
While the big mobile game makers are taking advantage of their resources to attract as large a share as possible in this new market, access to it isn’t limited to just them as smaller players and development studios are still trying their luck.
With download portals, they no longer need to suck up to the carriers to be able to reach the same public as the established players, as more choice is now given to the consumer, which has now given birth to its own ecosystem with comments and recommendations by the players.
