Auto completion of the DOS commands

January 05th, 2004 - 06:00 pm ET by R. K.

Have you ever wanted to complete a DOS command with the help of the “TAB” key, just like under Linux? This small tip will allow you to do things a little quicker and mean that you will no longer need to type in long commands, with which you may make mistakes
;-)

There is nothing like seeing an example, so here we go:

If you want to enter the following command:
“dir c:\program files”

Instead of typing the whole thing you can enter:
“dir c:pro”

And then simply press the “TAB” key to complete the command.

This interesting function is available by default in Windows XP, but a small change is needed to activate it under Windows 2000 and here is how it can be done:

Click “Start”, “Run” and type “regedit”. Click on the OK button and you will have the registry open in front of you.

Go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft

In the right hand side of the registry, double click on the Command Processor key and give this that value 9, instead of 0.

You can also download these reg files which will look after the changes for you.

There is no need to restart your computer as the changes will be immediate.
