RIM has unveiled the BlackBerry Tag, a data exchange method between two BlackBerry’s running BlackBerry OS 7 with integrated NFC modules.
While Research in Motion (RIM) suffered an embarrassing outage affecting numerous countries in Europe and the Middle East, their co-CEO Jim Balsillie was unveiling BlackBerry Tag at the GITEX show in Dubai, with this being an NFC data exchange system (Near Field Communication) for the brands handsets.
With BlackBerry OS 7 and the first BlackBerry Smartphone’s with an NFC module, it will soon be possible to easily share information between two handsets in close proximity via the "tap to share" function which required that the two handsets are only a few centimetres apart.
Simplified data exchanges
It can be used to share virtual business cards, photos, URL’s and even create a new contact within BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) in this way. BlackBerry Tag will be activated with the next update to BlackBerry OS 7, while the first handsets to come with this function being the latest releases: BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9930 and BlackBerry Curve 9350 / 9360 / 9370.
The manufacturer has also announced that they will make API’s available to integrate Blackberry Tag into mobile applications.
