both its README file and "apt-file search bin/gnome-volume-control"
say that it is provided by gnome-media.

This documentation is outdated. gnome-volume-control is not longer
provided by gnome-media, it's functionality has been merged into
gnome-control-center. See [1]. I've forwarded the issue upstream.
