Bug#668678: gpk: gpk fails to install downloaded chrome.deb file from google, exits with error

April 13th, 2012 - 08:00 pm ET by Ulsi Zugnam | Report spam
Package: gnome-packagekit
Version: 3.4.0-2
Severity: normal
File: gpk

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?
I wanted to install chrome from Google. Downloaded google-chrome-
stable_current_amd64.deb file provided by Google. My system is a hybrid
wheezy/unstable configured with apt-pinning. I opened the file with the option
"Open with Software Install" from Nautilus.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
Opening the file with "Open with Software Install" opens/uses Gnome-packagekit
to install the google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb. Packagekit exits with
two identical messages: One from gpk-dbus-service and another from Gpk-install-
local-file
GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._pk_5ftransaction_5ferror.Code4:
SimulateInstallFiles not supported by backend

GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._pk_5ftransaction_5ferror.Code4:
SimulateInstallFiles not supported by backend

I decided to install package with Gdebi. Gdebi installed package, but failed to
create menu icon in list of applications under Gnome 3 menu.
* What was the outcome of this action?
I had to manually add a link using alacarte to point to /opt/google/google-
chrome
* What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected gnome-packagekit to install package without error messages but it
may be the way Google packages their deb file. The deb file installs program in
/opt/ directory. In Ubuntu, package installs correctly and menu icon is shown
in unity and gnome-shell desktop environments.

Hi!
GPK should have shown you a message like "Backend does not support
action InstallFiles" - have you seen that message?
The info already tells you what is wrong: The apt backend of
PackageKit in Debian does not support this action right now. However,
the upcoming release of PackageKit will contain a *very* huge set of
improvements for aptcc, where one of them will be support for
InstallFiles(), so you should be able to install the package via GPK.
The other issue with GDebi you mention might be releated to multiarch
changes, but to be sure I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow :)
Cheers,
Matthias
