A comparison of autonomous GPS systems: 7 16/9 PND devices

Battery operated GPS devices or PND (Personal Navigation Devices) are becoming more common, offering more and more options. Compared to just a year ago, the middle of the range models we compared which were between 345 and 630 $, are now a whole lot better. We find 16/9 screens, more powerful processors, 3D display, voice commands, Bluetooth hands free kits, traffic info and even a receptor for digital television channels! Abandon the paper map and let us guide you with your new companion.

TakaraThe Takara Nomade GP43 device is a subtle mix of varnished plastic and anti slip rubber, allowing for a better fit into the palm.

The Destinator navigation software is displayed on a 4.3” screen, although it is quite minimalist. When you plan your itinerary all possibilities are on offer. By address (town, post code, streets), recently visited locations, favourites, and stages with POI’s. With more then 50 categories, these are quite numerous offering the classics like service stations as well as practical locations like the cinema, town hall, casino, bowling…

The menus ergonomics are debatable as you sometimes have to search the sub menus to find what you are looking for. The display is possible in either 2D or 3D, although it is unfortunate that the 2D is illegible which means we have no regrets not using it.

There are numerous additional functions with all multimedia including audio, photo and video as well as a video game which trains your memory. The SD card though is only 1GB, so you may have to invest in some additional capacity very quickly to be able to take advantage of your MP3 collection. The radar updates are free and easy to install, as you simply need to copy the BMP and DAT files onto the card. The GPS antenna allows for added sensitivity (in tunnels).

In summery this is a product that is easy to access, although in terms of quality/price rapport it is debatable.

+ Pros

  • 3D display is of good quality
  • Richness of POI’s

- Cons

  • No TMC traffic info
  • No Bluetooth connection with your GSM phone
  • Heavy for a GPS
