A comparison of autonomous GPS systems: 7 16/9 PND devices

Battery operated GPS devices or PND (Personal Navigation Devices) are becoming more common, offering more and more options. Compared to just a year ago, the middle of the range models we compared which were between 345 and 630 $, are now a whole lot better. We find 16/9 screens, more powerful processors, 3D display, voice commands, Bluetooth hands free kits, traffic info and even a receptor for digital television channels! Abandon the paper map and let us guide you with your new companion.

VDODAYTONThe quality of the VDO Dayton PN 4000 TNT case with its grey plastic is easily seen, with this device distinguishing itself from the others with its digital TV receptor and 30 channel GPS chip! This is a product that is aimed squarely at television fans or those on the road a lot.

The 3D navigation screen is very legible but not as well detailed as other models. Here it seems that the 3D fill sup in waves without the textures, which provide it with some relief… Alternative itineraries are offered by address, contacts, previous destinations, POI, coordinates with the fastest route, the shortest and most economical.

While driving, arrows on the right will indicate which lane you should be in (Lane Guidance). The layout is also completely customisable. You can input the time of departure, time of arrival, distance to travel, the speed you will drive at, the battery status and GPS status.

The real time traffic info and BT are present but are only used if you have paid for these options. The processor runs at 372 MHz and has to manage your MP3’s, video, and animated slideshows. It should be noted that the television automatically cuts out when the vehicle is being driven for security reasons.

We were surprised at the antennas sensitivity which connects to the cars roof with two connectors. The PN 4000 battery runs at 2200 mAh and presents two advantages, it offers a battery life of 4 ours and it is easily removed (a door at the rear).

Purchase the VDO PN 4000 TNT GPS from 455 dollars
