Configuring and optimizing your card

As I frequently read through forums, I have noticed that there are a lot of people out there that are having problems configuring their video cards, especially those with TV outputs.

To fix this problem, I have decided to create a tutorial so that everyone can take advantage of the features of their video cards. These explanations concern those that have ATI video cards. I hope to provide an identical tutorial soon for Nvidia cards.

To start:

You will need to completely uninstall all of your old drivers which can be done by using the Driver Cleaner program: http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

Next you will need to download the latest drivers available from the ATI website: http://www.ati.com/

During the driver installation, leave the box that concerns the “multimedia centre” ticked, as this will be needed to configure the video cards output. You should also remember to connect your output to your television.

Once this has been completed, we will look at the configuration: Right click on the desktop and select “Properties”. Then click on the “Settings” tab and in the “view” drop down list verify that option 1 is the default. This will start with “multiple monitors”.

Next verify your screens resolution. For a normal 15 inch screen (not an LCD) your resolution should be 800 x 600, with 1024 x 768 pixels selected for a 17 inch screen. Although you can select what resolution is best for you and your hardware.

Next you should change the colour quality. The “Highest (32 bits)” resolution is the best option.

Next click on the “Apply” button.  Your screen may flicker a bit and look out of shape, as if it is not properly adjusted. This is normal and you should then click on the “Advanced” button.
