Creating a VPN server under Windows 2000/XP Pro

This tutorial will show you how to easily install a Virtual Private Network under Windows 2000 and XP Pro. The VPN protocol allows you to interconnect two computers across the internet by using an encryption protocol. In this tutorial, we will use the PPTP protocol that is managed by Windows 2000/XP for the incoming connection.

If you use the Windows XP firewall:

In the internet connection properties go to the advanced tab:

Click on Settings:

Verify that the “connection via PPTP” is selected.

Loss of the Internet connection when the VPN is made:

When you connect to your VPN, your client will try to use your VPN server to access the internet and you will therefore not be able to surf. To fix this, edit the TCP/IP properties of your VPN connection:

Click on advanced…

Uncheck the “Use the default gateway for the remote connection”.

So there you have it! Your server and VPN client are both configured.
