A custom icon for your USB key

March 06th, 2008 - 05:10 am ET by D. T.

When multiple USB keys are connected to the same computer (to transfer data between keys for example), it can become difficult to identify which of the keys is which in My Computer, as the icon is the same, with only the drive letter changing.

To make the identification of a US key easier, you can rename it by following this previous tip. But if you’re more the “visual” type, here is another solution that is easy to implement. It consists of choosing a custom icon to be displayed with your USB device.

After having recovered the icon you want from the Internet or from one of the others you already have, copy it to the root of the USB key. Next, right click on it and from the drop down menu that appears, select “New” and “Text Document”.

In the text file, enter the following lines:
[Autorun]
icon=X (replace X with the name of your icon file; in our example: "monicone.ico" )

Save the file with the name “autorun.inf” in the same location as the icon, which means in the root of the USB key.

Now, when you plug your USB key in the icon will be customized.
