Delete, rename and move avi files

February 22nd, 2004 - 06:00 pm ET by R. K.

At one time or another then you have probably hade problems deleting, moving or renaming an AVI file. When you try to execute one of these services then your system will actually tell you that the file in question is being used and that it is not possible to perform the request that has been asked.

This can be annoying sometimes as it will appear sometimes when you are not even using the AVI file! We will therefore see that it is impossible to delete, move or rename this file. This is due to a poorly performing module (shmedia.dll) which allows you to look at a multimedia file’s properties. To fix this problem we will simply disable the use of this module by deleting it from the registry.

Here is how it can be done:

Click “Start”, “Run”, and type “regedit. Click the “Ok” button and you will have the Windows Registry open in front of you.

Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID
\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}

Under this key you will find a sub key called InProcServer32 which you will need to right click on and select “delete”.

Confirm that this file can be deleted by clicking “Yes”. From now on you will have no problems with your AVI files.

As I mentioned at the start of the tip, this module allows you to see the properties of multimedia files, which you will now see is no longer displayed. You can see this in the screen capture:

Enabled
Disabled

If you don’t want to make these changes yourself then I have provided 2 Reg files, the first one being use to create the change and the other one being used to undo the change. This means that the changes made for the AVI files will be created for you. Here are the reg files:

Disable
Activate

It is not necessary to reboot your computer as the changes will be immediately created with the reg files used.
