The “Shared Documents” folder is a folder that is created during the Windows XP installation and allows you to swap files over your local area network easily. If you only have one computer, or if you don’t want to use this option, then there is a simple way of disabling it.

Here is how it can be done:

1.Disable the folder share on “Shared Documents”

Click “Start” and select the “My Computer” icon to see its contents. On the screen capture below, in the Documents on this computer section, you will see the presence of the “Documents” and “…’s Documents” (with the second one being the “My Documents” folder of the user profile currently being used).

Right click on the “Documents” folder and select “Sharing and Security”.

In the Network sharing and security section, uncheck the “Share this folder on the network” box and click “OK” like below:

Now the share will be disabled, with the folders:

  • “Documents” and
  • “…’s Documents”

Still located on the computer and are functional.
