Quickly disconnect your memory stick

November 12th, 2008 - 05:15 am ET by B. C.

As you no doubt know, removing a memory stick (or USB hard drive which is connected) without having taken the time to cut the data stream can lead to the loss of data. This is why under Windows you have to use the “Safely remove USN devices” icon which is in the notification zone next to the clock.

When you have to do this often it can become quite annoying, due to the number of steps that you have to perform. Firstly you have to double click on the icon to open the shut down module, then double click to select the device, and finally once this has been done you have to click OK to remove the device. But this isn’t all, as you then need to validate the operation to close the removal module. There is a faster way that is easier.

You simply need to go into the Windows My Computer (called Computer under Windows Vista), right click on the icon of the peripheral and from the drop down menu, click on “Remove Securely”.

This tip is something that you can use daily, and will see you being able to save a lot of time.
