Test of Windows Live Messenger - MSN 8.0

March 01st, 2006 - 06:00 pm ET by Guillaume K.

We are going to preview the latest version of the Microsoft Instant Messenger. Windows Live Messenger (or Messenger 8), which is the successor of MSN Messenger 7.x, the next in the progressive migration of services available from Redmond. Hotmail account migration will follow with them being transferred into Live Mail, the opening of a Live.com portal will become available, and further additions added.

The version initially tested was the Beta version Build number 369, which was replaced recently by version Build number 566, only available for the last two days. You should know that this last version is freely available, as invitations to participate in the Beta testing have a large distribution making it readily available.

Note: The latest version, Build number 566 has bought a lot of new modifications, an interface a lot closer to the version 7.5, the “disappearance” of some functions and the addition of some others. But we will come back to this.

Build number 369:

We need to be frank. With the installation of Build number 369, the graphical interface was a shock. The borders of the application, seen in our screen shots in purple, were actually a flashy orange colour initially! We decided to quickly change this and made the following judicious choice by clicking on the small pot of paint found at the top of the program. This gives you access to either preset colours, or a colour spectrum, allowing you to personalize the interface to the colour of your choice.

The possibilities of viewing your contacts are numerous. We see on the screen capture below a view by type. We have the possibility of sorting by status, date of last update to personal profile, and by details. You will find underneath some illustrated images that allow you to better see what is being described.

The view by details is, if you ask me, the most usable. It offers access to the primary functions of sending instant messages and / or emails, easily performed with the small symbolled buttons representing the actions to be performed. The two small arrows give you access to your contacts MSN card. This viewing mode is a mix between “sort by status” and “view details.”

Build 566 :

The graphical interface of the new build number 566 has already been worked a lot more to have the traditional light blue look, so well known from previous versions of MSN Messenger. We also noticed that the status icons (busy, not available, online) are once again active, which wasn’t the case with the old Build number, where the distinction between occupied and offline was the same.
