The Facebook social network has inaugurated a new applications area. This App Centre works for both Web applications and mobiles.
Last month, Facebook spoke about the coming release of an applications portal. This App Centre was inaugurated yesterday and will be progressively deployed. More than 600 applications will be available for its launch.
The Facebook App Centre is directly accessible via this web page. It is also displayed via the iOS and Android Facebook applications (not yet internationally). This space then offers user’s access to Web and mobile applications.
There are a dozen categories (Facebook, games, entertainment, music, news, utilities…). The App Centre of course largely draws on Facebook’s social aspects for personal recommendations. A selection is determined on user’s interests and their friend’s applications.
Facebook has promised only "high quality apps", and those that get good feedback from users. We find a standard ranking system with stars, and by clicking on an application, users will be displayed a detailed explanation page.
From a computer, you also have the possibility of sending an app to your mobile. If a mobile app needs to be downloaded, it will be sent the installation file from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
The Facebook App Centre makes things a lot clearer than before for users trying to select applications. Previously users had to search high and low and there was no easy search page…
One of Facebook’s interests in this is that users will spend more time on the social network. This has been questioned, with a recent Reuters – Ipsos poll putting this into question.
