To realise the success of the free Firefox navigator you just need to follow its evolution in the number of downloads since its release on the 9th of November 2004. The number of downloads doesn’t properly indicate the number of users, but its rise is certainly noticeable and it has a lot of people talking about it.
Some important dates:
18th of October 2004: 5 million
3rd of December 2004: 8 million
12th of December 2004: 10 million
1st of May 2005: 50 million (see image below)
19th of October 2005: 100 million
As you can see, the project has not stopped progressing with each version bringing new features or error corrections. The constant improvements allow Firefox to not just find its public among new comers to the internet but also in the form of users switching from other web browsers, particularly those from Internet Explorer, who have seen how powerful and secure it has been made by its always conscious designers.
Just a story, at the release of version 1.0, the Mozilla foundation was hoping to reach 10 million downloads in 100 days, as it turns out, 33 days would have been sufficient. The bet was made, and today, less then a year after its release, there have been over 100 million downloads. It’s a real success.
