Game Jackal Pro test

Whether it is to reduce the sound noise of your optical reader, to protect your originals, removable optical drives that are too fragile or so that you can avoid having to transport them to each LAN party, it is always appreciable to not have to take your original CD’s each time you want to play them on the PC. This is possible with the Game Jackal Pro application which is today developed by SlySoft.

The major reason that you can’t play your games without inserting your CD/DVD’s is due to the copy protection. There is of course a good reason that anti-pirate procedures are put into place, but these nevertheless provide some problems for honest users (with this not preventing piracy in the end anyway). The problems are often the noise that comes from optical drives and the fragility of CD/DVD’s (scratches, dust, heat, etc).

TAGES     TAGES copy protection

While not widely used in the field of video games, the TAGES™ protection is without a doubt the best protection available today.

Without going into the historical and technical details, TAGES™ is a semi-software and semi-hardware protection method that is extremely efficient and makes it impossible to backup, emulate or physically copy a CD/DVD. You can find some examples of this with the games Beyond Good & Evil, Moto Racer 3 and Fahrenheit. This protection imposes a pressing method that is unique and difficult to put into place, but which makes it impossible to reproduce with burners that are available on the market. It is difficult to explain the reasons that the software makers have given for being late with the TAGES™ protection method. This means that there is still essentially three kinds of anti-copy protection methods today present on the games market: Safedisc (macrovision), Securom and Starforce.

StarForce_schema

While today it is simpler and “nicer” to use, StarForce is still the most widely criticized protection method. The split between Ubi Soft and StarFirce has now also been consummated for a few months.

While the techniques put into place are different, these three protection methods function all in the same way:

  • Each of these protections call on the hardware support when being created (physical structure of the disc, preceded by the specific pressing allowing you to insert electronic protection keys into the structure, etc).
  • In the event that burning software is detected, or that a virtual drive is activated, the protection will prevent the application for running. This will prevent the reproduction of the digital signatures.

Securom

Securom can be directly implemented by Sony DADC (www.sonydadc.com) or via the internet with the help of the SecuROM Online Encryption Toolkit (OETK).

Simply, if these protections allow you to prevent piracy, they in reality limit the damage as most games can still be found easily on the internet.
