Google Me : rumours spread of a Facebook-like portal

Google may intend on launching their own social network similar to Facebook, titled Google Me. For the time being, this is just a rumour.

Google-Buzz-LogoThis is an "enormous rumour" according to the author of this tweet, stating that Google will launch a competing service to Facebook very soon. The author claims that he has a "very credible" source, and since the author is none other than Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg, a lot of credit is given to the rumour. The rumour surrounding Google Me will surely spread across the web like wild fire, with various predictions then being launched while Google will continue to maintain this subject secret.

A new adventure into the domain of social networks seems rather surprising on Google’s behalf after the relative failure of Orkut, a service which is popular in some countries like Brazil, and the launch of Google Buzz (paired with Gmail) which was heavily penalised from the beginning due to controversy surrounding private life.

One of the more interesting predictions for the moment is that Google Me will see an evolution of Google profiles. These profiles allow you to display information linked to the use of Google Services and sharing with others. With the addition of a news stream, for example, the move towards a Facebook look wouldn’t take much work.

Unless Google formally denies the rumour, news about Google Me will surely be spoken about in great detail.
